Hunting Safety Tips to Follow This Fall

Hunting Safety Hunting season provides a great opportunity to be out in nature and matching wits with game animals, whether alone or with friends. Unfortunately, each year there are also tragic reminders that hunting requires adhering to safe practices. These are a few hunting safety tips to help keep your hunt memorable for all the right reasons.

  • Gun Safety

We have all heard gun safety rules many times. Still, it is worth remembering as hunting season approaches. Always treat every gun as if it is loaded, never point a gun at anything you do not intend to kill or destroy, keep the safety engaged and your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire the gun, and always be certain of what is behind your target in case of a miss or pass-through. In almost every case of a gun-related accident, one or more of these basic safety rules were not being followed.

  • Weather Safety

Hunting brings us out into nature and all that goes with being in the great outdoors. A change in weather in the city may be inconvenient, but is usually managed without much difficulty. In the outdoors, weather can cause discomfort or even danger. Always carry appropriate extra clothing on hunting trips. Examples might include a waterproof outer layer, extra socks, and extra warm clothing.

  • Emergency Planning

You may plan to hike out to your favorite hunting spot, and then return to the vehicle about dark, but sometimes things go wrong on a hunting trip. Hunters may become lost, injured, or sick. Basic emergency planning is an important step in preparing for a hunting trip.

Emergency gear like a flashlight, cell phone or radio, and fire starter can easily make a big difference if you end up outdoors longer than planned. Another simple step that matters in an emergency is letting someone know where you will be hunting and when you plan to return. Should anything go wrong during your hunt, at least someone will know when and where to send help.
